The Hunt -(Please click "Hunting Packages" below for pricing)To the avid upland wingshooter, nothing compares to the flush of a wild ringneck pheasant. The simultaneous explosion of color and sound followed by the explosive report of a fine shot gun, and hopefully, if all goes as it should, the retreive and devilery of another bird for your game bag.
Watching the dog's behavior change as it detects the slightest scent of a pheasant. His pace quickens as he defines the bird's escape route and quickly closes the distance between you and your quarry. Although you've hunted pheasants for many years, it never gets old and there is still that moment of surprise when the bird makes the critical decision to take wing.
You know its coming. The dog is red hot, moving without thought or concern of anything but getting that bird. You know the bird would much rather run than fly, but a good dog wont give him the option. The only questions now are when will the bird makes it move, will it flush within gun range and will it flush within your gun's range or that of your dearest friends?
| Savvy has successfully worked and held this bird. Due to their tendency to run, its said that wild ringnecks make for sloppy pointers. However, this particular three year old has learned the game and learned it well! | My father told me that the important questions in life all answer themselves if we just give them enough time. As your thoughts momentarily drift back to your mid-teens when it was just you and your dad and Sage, your beloved part lab & part something else hunting in your favorite stand of native grass, you're suddenly brought back by an explosive combination of dark colors and cackling 18 yards in front and to your left. No question this bird is a rooster. Fortunately or unfortunately, you're the only one in the group with a shot at the bird. In one deliberate fluid motion, your gun is shouldered and fired. The second barrel won't be needed on this bird.
A short time later, the reward for both dog and hunter is presented to you by a well trained guide dog with an exceptionally soft mouth. After carefully inspecting the bird, taking note of its relative size, length of tail feathers and spurs, you give a quick prayer of thanks as you carefully place the bird in your game bag. Everything went right with this bird, and this particular bird is destined to the taxidermist's studio rather than the table so that you have a permanent reminder of your hunt at Grand Ciel Lodge.
